This approach seems appropriate. I’d even argue that we don’t much care for exact breakpoints if they are very close, so 64-bit arithmetic might be good enough.
Maybe these considerations are also another hint that calculating one breakpoint at a time using a simple min-cut algorithm is preferable for our small instances.
